Pricing FAQ

Some important questions to ask while getting quotes from movers:

  • How many movers do I get for the hourly rate? THIS QUESTION IS VERY IMPORTANT! Some lower rates mean fewer movers.
  • What is the hourly minimum charged?
  • After the minimum is met, what increments of time do you bill?
  • Do they charge a travel fee? How is it calculated?
  • If they don't charge a travel fee, when does the clock start on move day?
  • Are taxes, CC fees included in the hourly rate?
  • Do you charge extra for stairs?
  • Are there fees for supply items?
  • Are there fees for heavy items?

Our travel fee is meant to cover the mileage and time to travel from our offices to your initial stop and from your final destination back to our offices. It covers:

  • Mileage

  • Crew time

  • Truck, Fuel, and Tools

The travel fee is set up front as part of our quote and varies by distance. It does not change, so rest assured you're not paying us if we're caught in traffic. To get an accurate estimate of your moving expenses, try our moving cost calculator to better understand the travel fees and other potential costs.

Tips for movers are optional and given when movers provide great service. Tips can be any amount, but like restaurants, people usually tip a percentage of their move, anywhere from 10%-25%. When hiring movers, you are welcome to tip in cash or with a credit card. 100% of your tip will go to your crew. If you don't have the budget for a tip and loved the service, please consider giving your mover a review online and shouting them out by name.

There are many ways to control and/or reduce your moving expenses, whether it's a local or long distance move. When hiring professionals to do the job, we recommend the following:

  1. Be ready! Like really ready. Ensuring that as much as humanly possible is boxed up in each room and labeled for the destination location.

  2. If you have the ability to take down wall-mounted TVs, do so. Home Depot sells great boxes for flat screens.

  3. Reduce the number of items being moved. Donate or sell what you are not using.

  4. Schedule your move for mid-week, if you have flexibility. We discount mid-week rates to keep our crews busy.

  5. Don’t select the lowest bidding movers. While you may think you're saving money, it may actually cost you more in damages or hours spent on the move.

  6. Check out alternative supply sources for packing materials and boxes. Neighborhood forums are a great place to check, as someone may have boxes they’ll give you.

DIY moves, while generally cheaper than moving professionals, come with their own unique pain points, such as:

  1. Time and effort spent (think of very long day or days, depending upon size of house, belongings, etc.)
  2. Risk of injury or breaking household belongings during the move
  3. Inconveniencing your friends or family
  4. Food for helpers, gas for truck, renting a Uhaul or Ryder truck
  5. Supplies (boxes, paper, plastic shrink wrap, bubble wrap, tape, etc.)

On average, depending upon supplies, size of house, and mileage, you can expect to spend anywhere from $500-800 for a local DIY move.

For a long distance DIY move, expect to spend $1200-1800 on the truck rental alone, $500+ on gas (about 1100 miles estimate) plus supplies and any hotel, if more than a day's drive

Generally, a move is considered a long-distance move when it is over 400-450 miles. These moves are generally billed based on the weight of household goods and the traveling distance.

3 Men Movers is capable of moving long distance moves, but may not be the best choice. Part of the cost calculation that long-distance movers include is their ability to get a moving truck either back to the origin location or to the next available move. When a truck travels empty, it is considered "dead heading" to its next location. Those costs are typically passed on to the consumer and can be quite spendy, depending on distance.

We are able to move customers from Houston to Dallas, for example. The moving date will determine the exact travel arrangements and costs. The travel between our service area locations would be billed at an hourly rate, and the travel fee would be from our office to the 1st destination, and the final destination back to the origin office.

For an instant cost estimate, feel free to contact us directly. We can provide you with an accurate quote based on your specific needs and timeline.

The cost of moving locally depends on a number of factors, some being:

  • DIY or hiring professional movers

  • Distance from your current location to new location

  • Amount of household belongings and materials needed to pack/protect

  • Truck rental costs

  • Hidden costs, like damages from a self-move, buying food, gas, supplies, etc.

On average, a local DIY move ranges from $150–$500, while a move with local movers or professional movers ranges from $1000–$2200, depending upon the size of the house and the amount of belongings.

Calculate Your Move: Free Moving Cost Calculator at Your Fingertips

Planning a move involves more than just packing boxes—it means budgeting for every part of the process. A moving cost calculator is a helpful tool that gives you an estimated cost based on key details such as home size, moving date, distance, and services selected. It eliminates the guesswork and helps you avoid unexpected additional costs.

At 3 Men Movers, our calculator makes it easy to understand what you can expect to pay. You’ll receive a free cost estimate to help with planning. Whether you're moving a studio apartment or a large home, this tool is essential for a clear, stress-free move.

Types of Moves: Local, Long Distance, and International

There are several types of moves, and each comes with different pricing models. A local move usually covers short distances within the same city and is charged by the hour. This is perfect for smaller jobs, like relocating a small one bedroom apartment.

A long distance move involves crossing state lines and often includes fuel costs, longer loading times, and more planning. If you're preparing for a moving day cross country, you'll need detailed coordination and possibly a storage unit if there's a delay in move-in timing.

Though we don’t directly handle international moves, we collaborate with reputable van lines to ensure your global relocation goes smoothly.

Moving Options: Full-Service, DIY, and Hybrid Solutions

Not all moves are equal in effort. If you prefer to avoid all the heavy lifting, consider full service movers like 3 Men Movers. We handle everything—from packing with quality packing supplies, bubble wrap, and packing paper, to loading, transport, and unpacking.

DIY moves are cost-effective if you have help from friends and family, but they come with added stress and require renting a moving truck and buying supplies yourself. Plus, you handle the entire moving process alone.

The hybrid option, such as using our moving containers, offers the best of both worlds. We drop off a spacious MOVITS container right at your door. You can load it yourself or have us do it. Either way, protection included—we wrap your items with blankets for safe transport to our climate-controlled storage.

Average Moving Costs and Key Pricing Factors

So, how much do movers cost? The average cost of a one bedroom apartment local move falls between $400–$900. A long distance move can range from $2,000–$7,000 depending on several factors.

The average total cost depends on distance, how much stuff you’re moving, the time of year, and any additional services like packing or storage. For example, moving during the peak moving season (late spring to early fall) often results in higher prices due to demand.

Some services—like handling pool tables or fragile artwork—come with additional moving services fees. These are always disclosed in advance in your quote to avoid surprises in the final cost.
